I Only Have Selfies — Is That Bad for Dating Apps?

Updated •Published •8 min read•By Dating Pics Editorial Team

What to do when your camera roll is all front-camera shots — for Tinder, Hinge and Bumble.

The Short Answer

One good selfie is fine. A profile made only of selfies is the problem. All-selfie profiles look the same from photo to photo — same arm-length angle, same distance, usually the same room — so they show people your face and almost nothing else. The close camera also slightly distorts your features.

Keep your single best selfie, then add three to five photos taken from further away: by a friend, with your phone on a timer, from a short video, or with an AI tool that starts from your real photos and keeps your face. You don't need a photographer to fix this.

Why All-Selfie Profiles Struggle

There are three separate problems, and only the first one is about the camera:

  1. Distance distorts. A front camera at arm's length is roughly 30 cm from your face. A 2018 study in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery found that at about that distance, the nose looks around 30% wider than in a photo taken from 1.5 metres — and at 1.5 metres the effect disappears. You look slightly different in selfies than in person, which is the opposite of what a dating photo is for.
  2. Every photo says the same thing. Five selfies answer one question — what your face looks like — five times. People also want to know your build, how you dress, where you spend time and what you're like.
  3. People read it as low effort. In a 2017 analysis of its own profile photos, Hinge found solo selfies were 40% less likely to get a like than other photos, and bathroom selfies 90% less likely (as reported by Elite Daily). It's older data from one app, so treat it as a direction rather than a precise number.

Which Selfie Should You Keep?

If you keep one, make it the best one you have:

  • Daylight from the front or side — facing a window or outdoors in shade. Not overhead bulbs.
  • Camera at or slightly above eye level. Never from below.
  • Phone held further away, or the 2× lens if your phone has one, so the distortion is smaller.
  • No mirror, no bathroom, no car seat. These are the selfie types people judge hardest.
  • A real expression — a slight smile or a laugh beats a held, neutral stare.
  • Recent. Same hair, same facial hair, same glasses as today.

Not sure which one is strongest? The free dating profile review scores a photo on face presentation, presence, setting and style, so you can compare two or three candidates.

How to Replace the Rest of Your Selfies

You need photos taken from further away. In order of cost:

MethodCostWhat it fixes
Search your camera roll and tagged photosFreeOften turns up 1–2 usable photos other people took of you
Ask a friend for 20 minutesFreeFull-body and candid shots, the hardest ones to get alone
Phone on a timer or tripodA cheap tripodDistance and variety — see our guide to taking dating photos by yourself
Record a short video, pick a frameFreeNatural, unposed expressions if you hate posing
AI photos from your own selfiesLow to mediumSettings, outfits and framing you don't have photos of — check every result

Aim for variety rather than volume: a clear face photo first, then a full-body photo, something that shows your everyday life, and one activity or interest. Our guide to what to do when you have no good pictures covers the full set.

Can You Turn Selfies Into Real-Looking Dating Photos?

Yes — that's exactly what AI dating photo tools do. You upload a few selfies, the tool learns what you look like, and generates new photos of you in different settings, outfits and framing. Done well, it solves the all-selfie problem without a photoshoot: the camera is suddenly a few metres away, in a café or on a street, instead of at arm's length in your living room.

Done badly, it creates a new problem. If a result changes your face, body, hairline or age, don't use it — people notice on the first date, and on apps that check faces it can cause trouble earlier. Plastic-smooth skin and luxury settings you've never been near are the other giveaways. See are AI dating photos catfishing? for where the line is.

How Dating Pics works with selfies

Dating Pics starts from 4 clear selfies — each one is checked for face visibility and lighting before your personal model is created. You then pick dating-oriented scenes and generate; standard photos take about a minute each. Not every output will be usable: keep only the ones a match would recognise you from. Plans start at $29/month, or there's a $9 one-time Starter Pack with up to 20 standard photos.

Does It Matter Which App You're On?

  • Tinder is built around fast swiping, so your first photo does most of the work. A clear face photo matters more than anything else here — that can be your best selfie, as long as it isn't the only kind of photo you have.
  • Hinge lets people like or comment on a specific photo, so photos that give someone something to ask about are worth more. A row of selfies gives them nothing to comment on.
  • Bumble gives you six photo slots. Fill them with different kinds of photos rather than six versions of the same angle.

Questions People Ask

Are selfies bad on Hinge?

One good selfie is fine. A profile of only selfies is weak on Hinge because people like and comment on specific photos, and selfies give them little to respond to.

Can my first photo be a selfie?

It can, if it's a clear, recent, well-lit photo of your face with no mirror or bathroom in it. A photo taken from a little further away usually looks more natural.

How many selfies should I have on my profile?

One, maybe two. Fill the rest with photos taken by someone else, on a timer, or from a video.

Why do I look different in selfies?

Because the camera is very close. At arm's length, features near the lens — especially the nose — look larger than they do from a normal conversation distance.

Are mirror selfies OK?

They're the selfie type people judge hardest, especially in a bathroom. Use one only if it's the only full-body photo you have, and replace it as soon as you can.

Can AI make dating photos from my selfies?

Yes. Some tools generate new photos of you from a handful of selfies. Use only the results a match would recognise you from.
